Nitrawal is part of the Nitrawal management organisation created in 2000 for the implementation of the PGDA, the Programme de Gestion Durable de l'Azote en agriculture en Wallonie (Sustainable Nitrogen Management for the farming sector in Wallonia).

In reality, the PGDA is the Walloon transposition of European directive 91/676/CEE, commonly referred to as the Nitrate Directive, which is intended to protect water against nitrate pollution from agricultural sources.

This Directive, and the PGDA, seek to :

  • Reduce water pollution provoked or induced by nitrates from agricultural sources,
  • Avert any pollution of this type.

The activities of the Nitrawal management organisation include :

  1. Supervising and advising farmers with their formalities aimed at ensuring compliance with the terms of the PGDA.
  2. Ensuring that this programme is widely implemented by the farming community.
  3. Building awareness and providing information for the general public.
  4. Having this programme approved from a scientific viewpoint.
